International students in Japan are not automatically permitted to work. To engage in part-time employment, students must obtain Permission for Another Activity from the Immigration Bureau.

  • Work up to 28 hours per week during school terms
  • Work up to 8 hours per day during official school holidays
  • Cannot work in adult entertainment establishments

2. Dependent Visa Holders

Spouses and children of working visa holders who are on Dependent visas may also apply for work permission.

  • Work up to 28 hours per week
  • Flexible work schedule (no distinction between school terms and holidays)
  • Cannot work in adult entertainment establishments

Application Requirements

  • Valid residence card
  • Application form for Permission to Engage in Activity Other than That Permitted
  • Passport
  • For students: Certificate of enrollment from your school

Important Rules

  • Working hours limit: Maximum 28 hours per week must be strictly observed
  • Prohibited work: Employment in bars, nightclubs, adult entertainment, and gambling establishments is prohibited
  • Multiple jobs: If working multiple part-time jobs, total hours must not exceed 28 hours per week
  • Tax obligations: Part-time income is taxable and must be reported

  • Difficulty obtaining other visa types in the future
  • Deportation in serious cases
